Reach out your Hand – The Gesture in Contemporary Photography

“The hand is one of the most important and most central motifs in art. The hand stands for understanding and doing, for the connection between hand and head. Photographs, while appearing less physical than paintings, in particular if they portray hands always hint at the craftmanship aspect in the history of the medium. The social aspect is shown not least by the gestures of the hand, because these are the most important agents controlling the interplay between proximity and distance. Our hands, like the rest of our bodies, are never entirely compliant.”
Hubert Beck
